Image Restoration

Image Restoration

When we were studying image manipulation, we had also been shown how to do image restoration, years ago photoshop artists would use this technique to make money from those who were unsure how to use this simple technique.

This image as you can see above, is scratched with some of the picture missing and with no colour. I will now annotate how to restore its colour, and how to restore its former glory.

The technique we were taught to use was something called the " patch " tool, a tool located just below the eyedropper tool, if you hold mouse left you can open a small menu which holds the Patch tool.

The Patch tool, basically highlights an area, and replaces the highlighted area with an area which is undamaged which is selected by the user. using this method you can restore images and effectively " repair " them.

Next I had used the Pen tool and the selection tool, to select certain areas, on the man's body, to give him a hint of colour to each area, doing this and then increasing the amount of colour for that area increases the colour restoration, effectively giving it a fantastic look, as demonstrated below.

Refine Edges

Today we had been working on the refine edges mechanic which is capable of making softer cuts into images to edit and move them around.

Heres the image where I finished refining the edges of the image and placed it into the beach.

Here below is the image of where I finished refining the image of the horse which was moved from the centre.

Heres after we used the quick selection tool, added and subtracted and removed the horse from the main image.

Below is the image and box after we clicked refine image to edit the settings. we had to increase the smart radius and put it at 6 to make the refining softer, after we added and subtracted the radius we used a mask to edit it and click okay.

Here is the original Image of the horse.

We then continued to try and manipulate an image out of a movie and place it in another image using the techniques we've learned today.

We used the same techniques, tidied it up and placed it within another.

this is my final image.

Matte Painting/Bert Monroy

Matte Painting

Matte painting is a method used by artists to create proportional landscapes and backgrounds for things that cannot be photographed or used in real life. which normally consist of mostly sci-fi movies and art for games.

We had been shown an artist called Dylan Cole whom has worked on several projects, including lord of the rings, the chronicles of riddick and Avatar.

Dyan is also a well known concept artist, specialising in video games and television adverts, the southern california native always had a passion for drawing, initial interest in comic book art gave way to matte painting and concept design after seeing comic book art of star wars.

Dylan attended UCLA ( University of california, Los Angeles ) as a fine arts major where he continued to work within art. Within a year and a half of graduation, he was on his way to New Zealand to go and do a matte painting for return of the king, since then Dylan has contributed art to over 50 films including Tron, Avatar and Alice in Wonderland.

Dylan Enjoys doing instructional workshops around the world at various events and schools and also has his own instructional DVD's from the Gnomon workshop for sale for those who want to be taught how to matte paint professionally.

Bert Monroy

While I was researching matte paintings, I had also spent my time researching an artist called Bert Monroy, Bert Monroy was born and raised in new york city where he spent 20 years in the advertising industry as an art director and creative director for various agencies as well as his own. Bert currently lives with his wife in Berkeley, California.

Bert Monroy's Times square is the biggest painting that he has ever created pushing the boundaries of the hardware and software as far as they can go. the flattened file weighs 6.52GB's and took 4 years to complete and is compromised of over 15,000 separate photoshop and illustrator files.

The digital artist created each element using Adobe Photoshop and adobe illustrator. He built the 6.52GB image pixel by pixel, using more than 750,000 Photoshop layers. Monroy spent countless hours creating intensely detailed scenes, the likenesses of his family, friends and many luminaries in the imaging industry, and landmarks in and around Times Square.

Bert Monroy focused heavily on every tiny little detail in the image, the smallest of the small, each and every pixel had been perfectly placed for the perfect image. One of the many reasons as to why he chose Times Square as a great place to do his art piece is because times square has so many different colours, let alone objects and activities going on, Bert wanted to focus on the in depth details of the " city life " . what people are doing, how they are feeling, and where they are going. The city's times square as previously mentioned has a heavy focus on colour and brightness, there are many different colours and different levels of saturation that really brings this city alive, and that's what Bert Monroy wanted to re-capture in his art piece, and I feel he's done this rather well.

Photoshop Compitition

We were tasked with uploading an image of our own into a photoshop competition, my Image that I entered is shown below, with the proof of entering above. I registered my Image on Pxleyes.com under the username of crazybeast.

Photoshop Tutorial 4

28/02/2013

Today, we did another demo with our tutor, we focused on doing placing beards on people, to which we used several different methods to create a beard on our tutor dan. We used methods like radial blur and Gaussian blur, to add effects on the painted beard to make it seem more authentic.

Before doing this those, we were tasked with adding a moustache to a random man, which is shown below, my attempt is on the left whereas the tutors attempt is on the right.

Artists/Apple Demo

14/02/2013

We've been tasked to find an artist we like and create an image inspired by the artist.

The Artist I have chosen to research and design an image inspired by, is an artist called Nicholas Bouvier.

Nicholas Bouvier is a one of the best artists around in the game world, He's worked on Halo 4, Images for borderlands, and Images for Assassins creed. His artwork is popular and famous for its ability to give off incredible feeling of the scenario thats been done, as well as beautifully landscaped and drawn areas of the world for that game. It really gives off a realistic feel to the game.

Here's a link to his biography and some of his work.

http://www.sparth.com/

I'd like to try and attempt an image inspired by his Drawings and Artwork.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We also did an apple demo today turning an apple into a cube, in my first attempt, I tried to turn the apple into the cube but I didnt get very far or do very well.

We then did the actual demo and I found I wasnt liquifying the apple correctly around the cube, once I did this and managed to have it correctly, I then went on to make a line around the face of the apple, and select it, I then went to the apples core, and went to

Select>All

Once I did this I went back to the apple document, and then went into..

Edit>paste special>In to

This placed the face within the apple from there I was able to edit the face to make it look more real.

Photo Format's

7/02/2013

Today we've been tasked with finding and researching several different types of formats that you can use to save on through photo shop.

JPEG - JPEG stands for Joint Photographic Expert Group as that is the name of the committee that developed the format, JPEG images are a tye of compressed file format, which has a variable number for compression and is also not limited to a certain number of colour like GIF's are, therefore JPEG's are best for compressing images so if you see a good looking large image on the internet, you can most likely count that its a JPEG.

PNG - portable network graphics was created to improve upon and essentially replace the more common GIF file, its advantages consist of the fact it does not require a patent license, being platform independant and being able to display more than 256.

One of the biggest drawbacks for PNG is it does not support animation compatibility. but files are being worked on to try and make PNG animation compatible such as the upcoming APNG file.

PSD - Photoshop Document's or PSD is the format used to save photoshopped files, reason being is if you save it as a PSD you can reopen it to continue editing your image.

GIF - Graphics Interchange Format's are compressed image files to reduce transfer time its also capable of being combined with multiple images to create animations.

For example....

GIF files tend to be the most popular format when it comes to logo's and internet website related images as images containing GIF text tend to be alot more clearer and detailed compared to JPEG's as sometimes JPEG's can be a little unclear.

TIFF - The Tagged Image File Format, is a file format for storing images, popular among graphic artists, the publishing industry, and both amateur and professional photographers in general. as of 2009 it is under control of adobe systems, originally created by a company called Aldus for use with desktop publishing, the TIFF format is widely supported by image manipulation programs along with publishing and page layout programs. TIFF's are popular due to the fact that because it stores data without losing a single piece of data, unlike various other formats. TIFF's are similar to both PNG and JPEG's just it saves more data for when its next opened.

Photoshop Tutorial 3 - 3D Images/Artists and Masking

Photoshop Manipulation

Today we had gone through a 3D images tutorial, we were shown how to change the colour channels to create a 3D effect, to do this we were told to do the following, which in turn created a 3D image.

We had to create 2 layers of the same picture, and on one layer did he following.

Image>Adjustments> Curves - Select Green and blue ( to create red ), and change each of the settings to 0 and 251.

While on the 2nd Layer...

Image>adjustments>curves - Select green and red ( to create blue ), and change each of the settings to 0 and 251.

Select the Least brightest coloured layer, and change the blending mode to lighten, then move the layer on top of the other and shift it slightly to the right or left, or the direction of where its pointing. the result is below.

In turn after we did he tutorial, we had to do our own 3D image using the technique.

to which the result is below from using the above technique.

Leopard Rhino Demo.

Afterwards we had to do a demo consisting of placing a leopard's skin on a rhino, to which we went through and placed a rhino on one layer and a leopard on a 2nd layer, we then changed the leopard into blend mode, and changed its size, although personally I found it much easier to maximize the size of he leopard skin to cover the rhino, the demo then consisted of going into the filter and then clicking " Liquify " the Liquify tool lets you stretch around the pixels/material to fit other things, bending it around another image. to change the blending we also clicked show backdrop and used it on the rhino to give it a more natural appearance, rather than it appearing so rough.

after this I only stretched a small amount of the leopard, over certain parts, as I had already previously made the image quite large to fit it over the rhino, afterwards I clicked ok to progress towards setting up a mask layer, to erase and add to certain parts of the rhino to remove any excess skin or or image particles. from there I shaded out the image slightly and edited the head and feet. below was the result.

The Leaf Woman Attempt.

We were tasked with attempting to recreate our own image thats similar to this image located below.

our task was not to re-create it, but choose a material of our own and try to recreate the concept of applying a texture to human skin. my attempt is shown below.

I used a metal grate, and changed the blend settings and mask settings to apply a metallic skin to the woman.

Our Artist

We were also tasked with finding an artist of our own choice, and designing a similar image to their style, I decided to choose Banksy as while I have been on this course, banksy has come up as one of if not my most favoured artist, aside oliver otner whom I also found quite interesting. Banksy's image as most of his images consist of art imitating a metaphor for example....

The above image is by banksy, a image that is similar to a metaphor, as describing no ball games with a picture of a rat playing a game. my Image is similar and influenced by banksy, which can be found below.

Ocean Demo

31/01/2013

Today we were tasked with re-creating an image and follow a demo that consisted of a how to tutorial of this image.

We followed through on the demo, using various tools including the pen tool to pin out the shark, and then using the direct selection tool to edit the pins and then clicking on the tab in the layers area, right clicking and making the selection, we obviously then used blend tools to place the shark and masking tools, but prior to that, we had a garden, we used the gradient tools to add in the ocean, we used one with a dark blue to light blue, then another one which was a blue to nothing. we then moved the gradients around to make it look plausable. we then drew a triangle of light, and then filled it with white, masked it and then changed the opacity to make it apear like a ray of light, we then repeated the process with the patch of light. then we added in the picture of the plane and changed the blend mode to hard light, and then added in the shark. my result is below.

I then decided to mod the picture abit more as I felt the floor wasnt quite right, I continued to shade it with blue, on a different layer, while burning the spotlight to make it appear as though light is on it, results below.

Photoshop Tutorial 2

Tutorial 2
17/01/2012

Today we had another photoshopping tutorial, our task was to try and attempt to copy a photoshopped art piece called Shatter. Shown Below.

We had to try and redo the above image in our way way, in how we think it was done, my attempt is shown below.

This was my attempt, as you can see mine wasnt too far off, but I still felt it needed a little change.

The tutorial consisted of first creating a black background, and easy way of doing this instead of using the manual fill, is by pressing CTRL+I to invert the white background to black.

From there we created a new layer, and created the text first off ( rather than creating the mist first like i did ) we then double clicked the layer area to get the layer settings up, we fiddled with the bevvle and emboss settings with the stroke to change the general design of the text, learning this technique I found im able to customize the text in a different way.

From there we decided to use the lasso tool around the text to get a selection area, on a new layer, we then went to..

Select>Modify>Feather Selection

To include the selection area on the text, from there we went...

Filter>Render>Clouds

From there we used the Radial blur around the text to give it a shining effect, We then used the Hue/Satuation to change and edit the colours around the Text and background, the result is below.

Afterwards we went on to write about two images by an artist called oliver ottner, Below are his two images, to which I will give a Brief analysis.

The first Image by Oliver Ottner, is a woman with a snake skin I really like this image as the skin appears smooth and stylish, with a natural coloured snake skin. The method he used was different layer methods on the right hand side, and using masks to add and remove parts of the skin. the same method is used on the picture below.

I also liked this second image as even though im aware its custom made it makes me feel like it is a realistic stone creation, its design is very in depth, with how it utilizes the blending abilities with the stone.

Photoshop Tutorial 1

Introduction to Unit 34

On completion of this unit the learner should be able..

1) Understand how image manipulation techniques are used In he work of others.
2) Be able to digitise source materials.
3)Be able to originate work using image manipulation hardware and software.
4) Be able to present own design outcomes.

As an Introduction to Unit 34, we were tasked to attempt to make our own snooker ball, Below was my first attempt before the tutorial.

I feel my first attempt was very bad I used basic tools to what I thought might be the best way to put it together, although baring in mind I didn't spend that much time on it. I feel given more time I could of possibly achieved a closer result.

We then went onto our tutorial with our Tutor, explaining several different in depth techniques, on how to Put together the snooker ball. Below is my result after the tutorial, there is a huge difference.

My snooker ball after the tutorial we used several techniques including Layer masking to use the black and white brush to shade in and out the colours, we also used the dodge and burn tools, which changed the shades of the outsides to add lighting effects to the ball and the shadow, there are also 3 dots on the ball to give the illusion that there is a light above the ball.

We also used the Gaussian Blur filter to make the shadow appear more natural with the ball, and turned the ball into soft light on the right hand side to make the ball appear more natural and smooth. Using the elliptical Marquee tool, we also used the add to selection and subtract from selection options to add and edit the Elliptical Marquee's. Using all these abilities we were able to complete the snooker ball within a short period of time, with the glossy, smooth and lighted effect. I feel I have benefited from this tutorial as its enabled me to use a variety of tools to enable realism on certain photos.
